The fuel is used to supply the demand of the ships that operate at the terminal and the formation water is sent to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. As is the case with the main terminal area, these tanks are equipped with a firefighting system activated automatically in the event of an emergency.

There are two Emergency Response Centers, one specific for land events and the other for sea events. The centers house rapid mobilization equipment such as vehicles and vessels, collectors, pumps, generators, barriers, containment tanks and many other items. In addition Tebig has a firefighting system that is automatically activated upon any relevant pressure change in the tanks, measured remotely.

This equipment helps transcend the slope and after that the product proceeds to its final destination. The pumps have a 5,000 HP capacity and can handle the volume of over one Olympic sized pool per hour.

This means it has a pier structure for ship operations. Better known as Tebig, this is the main facility responsible for oil handling to meet the Duque de Caxias Refinery requirements, over 100 km away. It also functions as a station for fueling ships and as a warehouse for product exports and coastal transport. In addition, it allows for ship to ship cargo transfer operations. The overhead view we now have is the main Tebig area.

It is capable of handling the largest class of oil tankers in total cargo capacity.  From here pipelines exit and pass through the Auxiliary Services Area and arrive in the main terminal area, interconnecting all structures. These pipelines are approximately 7 kilometers in length and are mostly submerged.

From here operators are capable of monitoring and executing various terminal activities, both in the main area and the Auxiliary Services Area and the pier. The team works in shifts on a 24/7 schedule. The operators rotate in 12 hour periods. Some pieces of equipment, such as those to operate Tebig, may also be monitored and controlled by the National Control and Logistics Center, CNCL, located at Transpetro’s headquarters.

Let’s see how it works: the oil extracted from the production fields is transported via pipelines or ships until it arrives at the terminals and from there it proceeds to the refineries, which transforms it into derivatives such as gas and diesel. These products may flow back to the terminals to be delivered to the distributors responsible for supplying the domestic and international markets. Due to the vast dimensions of Brazil, we have terminals and pipelines located in various regions. They are interconnected and ensure the distribution of products throughout the country.

Through them it is possible to select which tank should receive the oil received from Tebig or to distribute the product among the tanks. The manifolds are also remotely operated from a control room in the terminal. Also, here some pumps are located that will help drain the oil from the tanks to the pipeline that connects Tebig to Reduc. Arriving at the refinery, this oil will primarily be used to produce lubricants.

The arms represent a safe alternative for loading or unloading products from the ship. Each docking berth at Tebig is equipped with five loading arms. They are operated onsite, but automatically, and it is possible to operate up to three arms per vessel at the same time. Their maximum flow is 8 thousand cubic meters per hour for an operation that lasts almost a full day.

Called PIGs these devices are inserted in the pipelines and move inside them to conduct cleaning or perform some type of measurement, such as detecting possible corrosion or dents. The one where we are now is the scraper receiver of the PIG that is located inside the main area of Tebig. It receives the devices that are launched in the terminal area next to the pier. To get an idea of the size, the PIGs used at Tebig are a meter and half tall and more than a meter wide.

In this section is located the terminal control room, the scraper launcher, some tanks and the Emergency Response Center focused on sea operations, in addition to the Wastewater Treatment Plant known as WTP. It is responsible for treating waste originating from the oil production process such as formation water. The Auxiliary Services Area is located next to the pier at a distance of almost 10 kilometers from the main terminal area.

It is a transfer between ships, known as ship to ship. Here, the ships are fueled and product is loaded and unloaded for export or distribution to other points in Brazil by coastal transport. Tebig is the main outlet for oil produced by Petrobras. This handling corresponds to approximately 90% of the volume exported by Petrobras and 40% of domestic oil exports.

Operating in one direction this pipeline connects Tebig with Reduc and is responsible for transporting oil from the production fields to the refinery. The section you see here is an outcropping of Orbig inside the terminal, used for pipeline control and pipeline integrity operations. For most of the route it is buried underground.  With a length of 123 kilometers, a volume greater than one Maracanã Stadium tank or almost one Aframax ship can be accommodated inside Orbig.

Here are located 10 tanks called “Maracanã Stadiums” due to their large storage capacity. Together they can receive up to 700 thousand cubic meters of product, which represents the volume of 280 Olympic sized pools. They have a floating ceiling that moves according to the filling or emptying of the tank in order to prevent the formation of gasses. They are also equipped with highly reliable automatic volume meters, resulting in greater safety for the procedure.
