International Day for Women in Maritime highlights contributions by women to the sector

On 18 May 2022 we celebrated International Day for Women in Maritime. Instituted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in November of last year, the date celebrates women in the maritime industry.

The purpose is to promote expansion of women in the maritime sector. This goal is aligned with the IMO commitment to the sustainable development objective of the United Nations (UN) regarding gender equality.

At Transpetro women begam work as crewmembers in 2001. That year the company only employed one female maritime crewmember, electrician Florence Carvalho Costa. In 2002 there were two officers, one Engineer and one Nautical.

In 2003, female participation began to grow. Between 2006 and 2008 there was a 220% increase, with the hiring of 67 female crewmembers . Currently the company employs 137 women in its maritime workforce. Providing a work environment with respect to diversity is aligned with our Respect for Life, Persons and Environment values.
