Transpetro launches event for Safety Day on the Easement Strip in 13 Brazilian states

Transpetro launches this Wednesday, 8/16, an event with activities in 13 Brazilian States to promote awareness of the population on the importance of preserving the easement strips through which fuel pipelines pass throughout Brazil. Safety Day on the Easement Strip, known as 168 Day, was created by the company to warn about the need to maintain the integrity of the pipelines and divulge the 168 hotline, official channel for direct contact with the population.

With the purpose of strengthening community relations, Transpetro has entered into partnerships with several public agencies and private entities to offer a series of relevant and free services to the residents in the vicinity of the easement strips of the pipelines operated by the company.

The activities will occur in the states of Alagoas, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Sergipe, in addition to the Federal District. There will be offerings ranging from documents issue to lab exams to legal services and beauty services. All provided through partnerships signed with local municipalities, Sebrae, OAB, Senai, PoupaTempo and Hemocentro among other institutions.

“This action reflects the commitment of Transpetro to safety and to people. For us this is essential both inside and outside the company. Land pipeline transportation is what enables people to drive their vehicles, receive deliveries and travel by air.  And this operation is ensured by the safe logistics offered by the company. Maintaining this safety also depends on the collaboration of the population that lives along the easement strips, so community mobilization is essential’, explained Transpetro President Sérgio Bacci.

The relevance of continuous community relations is also highlighted by the Social Responsibility Sector Manager of Transpetro, Juliana Assis.

"Transpetro has a permanent relationship with the communities. We operate approximately 8,500 kms of pipeline easement strips throughout the country and are present in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people that reside in the vicinity of our installations, from Coari in the Amazon to Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul. For this we have developed various projects that impact the life of 800 communities all over Brazil. Our intention is to further emphasize the importance of social responsibility of the company in the coming years."

The three digit 168 hotline, created six years ago, is the channel through which the population in the vicinity of the pipelines can ask questions, make suggestions, or report suspicious activity in the easement strips or surrounding areas, such as night activities, strong fuel odor, or the presence of vehicles and people with hoses and other equipment. Confidentiality is ensured, the call is free and the hotline operates 24/7.

Drop in fuel theft cases

The number of illegal taps, as fuel thefts from pipelines are called, has been dropping in recent years. What has ensured this drop is the joint work between Transpetro and the security forces in the states, the support of the population through the 168 hotline and the social responsibility activities developed by the company. However, the risks posed by any damage to the facilities remain high.

The company recorded a drop in the number of thefts from 201 in 2020 to 58 in 2022, as a result of Transpetro’s joint efforts with authorities and public safety agencies, in addition to community support. However, a single accident has the potential of causing serious consequences, such as fires, explosions, spills, pollution and contamination of environmentally sensitive areas. For this reason Transpetro continues to promote awareness and prevention, alerting to the risks of criminal acts.

168 in Color

In addition to the citizenship services, Transpetro will also hold a new phase of the “168 in Color”, which consists of graffiti art on the walls of communities in the vicinity of the pipelines operated by the company. Local artists will draw art pertaining to the topic for the purpose of increasing confidence in the safety of the pipelines; alert the residents about caring for the sites;  create empathy with the brand and enhance the reputation of the company; and promote the community through artistic works..
