Transpetro will increase its logistic capacity by 25% with the ships planned for its Fleet Renewal and Expansion Program, the TP 25. The subject was a highlight of the first day of the conferences at Navalshore, the largest maritime industry show of Latin America, which is held August 20-22 at the Expo Mag in Rio de Janeiro. The new vessels will mostly serve Petrobras, contributing to reductions in chartering costs and consolidating Transpetro as a major player in energy transition.
Company President Sérgio Bacci reiterated the strategic importance of the TP 25 to energy and logistics efficiency of the Petrobras System. According to Bacci, the acquisition of vessels with low availability in the market reduces exposure to chartering cost oscillations.
“Petrobras is resuming the contracting of vessels for its own fleet. This program represents a change in the logistics strategy of the Petrobras System, resulting from expectations of an increase in oil production in the next few years. From the business standpoint, increasing the owned fleet generates greater value and provides more operational security and return to the stockholders, emphasized Bacci.
The TP 25 Program
Launched on 8 July via international tender, the TP 25 Program calls for the contracting of 25 ships in total. Initially, four Handy Class ships will be acquired for transportation of clean products, with capacity between 15 and 18 thousand deadweight tons (DWT), for cabotage operations along the Brazilian coast. The program further includes gas tankers and medium size vessels in addition to the Handy ships.
Jones Soares, Maritime Transport Director, highlighted the benefits of the program during the seminar “TP 25 – good for Brazil”. He explained that the tender model has the purpose of ensuring the best price for the company and the bid invitation includes price equalizations in the event the winner is a domestic shipyard.
“In these cases the Petrobras System may access the Merchant Marine Fund (FMM), which has quite attractive interest rates and will debit the cost of import duties from the final price, which occurs in the case of international contracting”, stated Soares.
According to the Director, the Transpetro Program is good for Brazil because it repositions the country regarding its naval strategy for logistics of oil and derivatives and low carbon products. In addition the new vessels will allow for a reduction of up to 30% in carbon emissions by the company.
“The TP 25 is a program that propels Transpetro to the future, creating growth opportunities for its logistics operations with a fleet that is even more sustainable”, he stated.
