We shared our trajectory in the transition to a low carbon economy at the Global Carbon Markets Conference- Decarbonization and Green Investments held 18-20 May at the Botanical Gardens in Rio de Janeiro. On the first day of the conference Transpetro President Luiz Eduardo Valente participated in the “Infrastructure and Green Logistics as Development Strategy”, which discussed the complementary nature of the transport modes in Brazil and covered new alternatives and investments to stimulate green business in the domestic infrastructure and logistics sector.
The Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Bruno Eustáquio, moderated the meeting, with was also attended by the CEO of Rumo Logística, João Alberto Abreu, the CEO of Ecorodovias, Marcello Guidoti, and the Global Head of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) of Embraer, André Luiz Tachard. The panel was transmitted online.
Valente highlighted that the logistic profile of the country may be balanced to allow for the coexistence of all modes and to reduce average emissions through which he called a mix of modes. “We can operate with synergy, so that each mode efficiently occupies its space in the market, each in its own specialty and each undertaking its mission. Transpetro, for example, cannot deliver product door to door, but is able to transport large volumes. We need to divide the space with wisdom, with society as the focus. The real value is at the end. This work will result in a better world for future generations, and leave a legacy that is our great responsibility”, he stated.
Transpetro Challenges
During the debate, the President presented the current Transpetro panorama regarding the decarbonization process of its operations and businesses. Relative to the Pipeline and Terminal segment, Valente explained how they are powered by electrical energy from renewable sources, and for the most part the pipelines generate 99.5% less emissions than the roadway mode.
“Through Osbra, the pipeline that connects Campinas to Brasília, we transport 800 thousand cubic meters of product monthly. This results in a reduction of 13 thousand double trailer trucks a month on the roadways, with 200 thousand tons less carbon emissions”, he stated as example.
According to Valente, the greatest challenge of the company in the transition to a low carbon economy is in the Maritime Transport segment, since the majority of the emissions result from activities performed at sea. For this reason the company works with diverse technologies, such as hull appendages, drag reducers on ships and anti-incrustation paints.
“In maritime transport there are various technological level actions that will provide an estimated 5% reduction in fuel consumption in the next three years. The world’s scientific community is also studying the adoption of rotary sails, electric ships, and other fuels to replace bunker fuel, such as ammonia and LPG, with a smaller carbon footprint”, he emphasized.
