World Maritime Day extols the importance of the sector’s workers

Today (09/30) together with the global maritime community, we celebrate World Maritime Day. Promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the date is dedicated to the workers, highlighting them as the essential actors of the future of maritime transport.

With the theme "Maritime workers; a central role in the future of maritime transport”, this year’s awareness campaign deals with safety and wellbeing aboard the vessels, in addition to covering training and qualification of the employees to meet the challenges and opportunities of digitization and automation.

“I take the opportunity of this date to honor and recognize all men and women, offshore or onshore, who devote themselves daily to the continuous development of maritime activities in our country. The technical competence of our teams has allowed us to attain considerable improvement in our efficiency, safety and environmental indicators, which are reflected in the company results. A Bravo Zulu to all”, said in praise the Director for Maritime Transport, Jair Toledo.

The 2021 IMO celebration further emphasizes the professionalism and efforts of the 2 million maritime workers serving on the worldwide merchant marine fleet during the coronavirus pandemic. “Maritime transport continued to handle over 80% of the world’s commerce, including the supply of vital medical equipment, food and other basic goods essential to responding to and recovering from Covid-19”, states the IMO on its website.

An annual initiative of IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), the World Maritime Day calls attention to the safety and protection of maritime navigation, the importance of maritime industries to world commerce and the protection of the marine environment.
